Have some summer fun in this 'Stang!

25 years ago, this bright red 1992 Mustang Summer Special convertible rolled off the line at Ford, on the way to showrooms. The very limited run verts were amongst a year run when production was already low during the Gulf War economy. To drum up more interest in the Mustang, Ford made these special edition ‘feature cars’ to boost sales, and ended up making some very cool instant collectibles.

AutoBarn Classic Cars has one of only 2,193 Summer Specials made up for grabs, and it looks as vibrant as it did sitting in the showroom so many years ago. Code 1FACP44E roadsters originally came with a sticker price with an added $850 for the package in addition to the price of the standard LX. The ‘Summer Special’ option included a rear decklid spoiler and color matched moldings, mirrors, and window trim.

The white vinyl top is power operated and has black Lori-cloth headliner underneath, which is in excellent condition on this example. Superior Wheel in Kansas City created the white alloy wheels by coated them in baked on opal opal pearlescent paint over silver, and they really pop on the Mustang!

On the inside, you’ll find an upholstered white leather interior. The Mustang also power tinted window, power seats, power locks, a factory gauge package, and premium AM/FM radio - so it was pretty loaded for a car that was built in the early 1990s.

Powering the Pony Car is a 5.0-liter V8 with a 9.0:1 compression ratio that’s rated as putting out 220-horsepower. Backing the engine is a five-speed manual transmission that feeds into a trac-lock differential. The front independent suspension features a set of MacPherson struts with stabilizer bars - the rear is a four-bar link system with coilover shocks.
