Haul Some Sunshine Into Life With A 1969 Volkswagen Type 2 Pickup

Call it the Microbus, Kombi, or Transporter, the Type 2 is one of the most iconic VW models ever. Just about any person on the street knows one when they see it, even if they’re not schooled in the technical background of the vehicle. That’s what makes this 1969 Volkswagen Type 2 Pickup so much fun, because it puts an unexpected, zany twist on an old favorite.

Painted Elm Green with a Cloud White roof, that was the original color scheme done by dealer John Heishmans Volkswagen in Arlington, Virginia. It also has white bumpers, and wheels, you can’t help but look at this VW and smile. It has that familiar, friendly face up front, including the docile round headlights and humongous Volkswagen badge. Chrome hubcaps keep up the vintage look of this vehicle.

Not only is there a tailgate, this ride also comes with side drop gates. In the bed are beautiful oak slates, adding a sense of craftsmanship to the vehicle. A storage compartment under the bed that’s accessed by flip-up doors on the sides of the Type 2 allows you to stash tools, drinks, or whatever else you want.

While the interior has the factory gauges and switchgear, it also features a VDO gauge cluster that was originally installed by the dealer. The Light Sand and Khaki Brown vinyl seats compliment the black dash and rubber floormats, adding some sophistication to the space.

A single-port 1600cc four-cylinder engine runs like a champ. You get to row through the gears with the 4-speed manual transmission, making this ride surprisingly fun to take anywhere.

The restoration of this Volkswagen began in 1999 and lasted until December 2002, with work performed professionally. The March 2003 issue of Hot VWs magazine features this ride, which is called “Inga” in the report. This unique German pickup is being offered through Savannah Classic Cars.
