There are some cars that are destined to be special as soon as they come out, and collectors usually know it, and the 1978 Chevrolet Corvette Limited Edition Indy Pace Car is one of those cars. To commemorate the silver and black Corvette that paced the field at the 1978 Indianapolis 500, Chevrolet sold a limited number of pace car replicas. And this particular example was snatched up and tucked away.
The good news is that it will be up for sale later this month at the GAA Classic Car auction in North Carolina... looking just as fresh and clean as it did from the dealership 41 years ago! Although Chevrolet had initially only planned a production run of 300 pace car replicas, that number eventually rose to 6,502 so that all Chevy dealerships had the chance to sell one. The listing doesn't mention how many miles are on this Corvette, but judging from the car's overall condition, it's probably in the low single digits.
As you can see from the images, someone bought this car before it could be prepped by the dealer, which left plastic on the seats and steering wheel and cardboard protectors on the carpet and side sills. Even the front spoiler was left off to prevent it from being damaged, and the original window stickers are still in the window. This car's still wearing its first set of Goodyear rubber, too! These pace car replicas came with either an eight-track player or a factory CB radio, and this Corvette proudly displays the latter.
The 1978 Chevrolet Corvette Indy Pace Car replica is one of the most collectable of the C3 Corvette generation, and you're probably not going to see them come up for sale very often. Especially in such factory-fresh condition.
This Corvette might not be the coolest Chevrolet pace car to exist, but it is perfect for the ultimate Corvette fanatic!
