As BMW gets ready to launch the sixth-gen M3, here's a look back at this car's history.

Introduced in 1986, the BMW M3 has become known as one of the most driver-friendly sports cars of all time. Up until now, there have been five generations of the M3 with each offering a distinct take on performance, and each generation has been graced with an even more special, peak-performance model. Carfection created a six-part series to give us a history lesson on the BMW M3 as well as a closer look M3 masterpieces.

The final episode from the M3 masterpieces collection is a wrap up of the series, and it breaks down which of the M3 models is best when it comes to engine, looks, brakes, chassis balance and overall top pick among the five generations. These are all important aspects when it comes to any performance vehicle, but comparing the original E30 M3 to today's F30 M3 seems like a difficult task.

Making this choice even more difficult is the fact that Carfection used the ultimate version of each generation of the M3 for this comparison – these include the E30 Sport Evo, E36 GT, E46 CSL, E92 GTS and the F30 CS. These are some of the best of the best when it comes to compact performance cars.

As much fun as this final video is to watch, be sure to check out the full six-part series to watch each of the incredibly fun M3 generation get tossed around a race track as the car gods intended.
