The concept will allow for electrification of many historic VWs.

The Volkswagen Group Components division is working on a new initiative to bring a holistic concept, born from their partnership with eClassics, to bring electrification to classic VW Beetles. Using exclusively new parts, the conversion components are available in a series production of Volkswagen Group Components. Based on the new VW e-up!, the components include the electric drive, one-speed gearbox, and battery system. The conversion itself will be completed by eClassics, and is being celebrated with their version of the e-Beetle at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt, Germany, which represents a near-production concept.

“The electrified Beetle combines the charm of our classic car with the mobility of the future. Innovative e-components from Volkswagen Group Components are under the bonnet – we work with them to electrify historically important vehicles, in what is an emotional process,” explains Thomas Schmall, Member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Group Components. “We are also providing Beetle owners with a professional conversion solution, using production parts of the highest quality.”

Tested production parts from Volkswagen’s new e-up! will be the basis for the conversion. These components are made at the Volkswagen Group Components on site, with the engine and gearbox coming from Kassel, and the battery system coming from Brunswick. The parts will work together for a peak performance rating of 60°kW /82°PS.

This higher performance rating and increased weight will also require modifications to the chassis and brake systems. Despite the extra weight, the e-Beetle is said to have a higher top speed and quicker acceleration than its more traditional counterparts.

Based on the e-Beetle concept, subsequent electrification for classic vehicles is on the horizon. . Schmall says, “We are already working together to prepare the platform for the Bus. An e-Porsche 356 could also be pursued in the future.”
