Why buy a new collector car and park it?

We see it quite often where people take brand new collector car and then immediately tuck it away in storage and bring it out decades later to sell. That is exactly the case with this 1991 Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1 that was recently sold on eBay for $40,000 after sitting for almost 30 years.

The original MSRP for an early Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1 was around $60,000, which included the Corvette's starting of around $30,000 and a ZR-1 package price of almost $30,000; and that doesn't even account for options, taxes or dealership markups. While this dealer probably received special pricing, this $40,000 doesn't seem like a great return on investment.

Now, we have seen examples of cars being hoarded with a huge return on investment like the $200,000 Buick GNX with eight miles or the $80,000 Corvette Pace Car Edition with four miles, but more often than not, the investment is far higher than the payout. For example, the ZR-1's MSRP is worth around $117,000 today (adjusted for inflation), and the price invested in this car doesn't even include any other costs like storage, insurance and the maintenance the car recently received.

For this car's buyer, though, the $40,000 purchase price of this 286-mile ZR-1 isn't that much more than the average C4 ZR-1 out there on the market. This means the buyer is essentially getting a museum-quality collector car since it's been stored and kept in like-new condition for decades.
