Rare 1982 Chevy Camaro Pace Car Hammers For $8K

The Chevrolet Camaro has been used as a pace car for the Indianapolis 500 more than any other car with the exception of the Corvette, but this is only a recent trend. This 1982 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 marked just the third time Chevy's pony car had paced the Indy 500, and Chevrolet produced 6,360 pace car replicas for enthusiasts to enjoy.

This particular example is in amazing condition with what is believed to be low, original miles, and it was auctioned off over the weekend through Raleigh Classic Car Auctions for $8,200.

As far as pace cars go, this Camaro Z28 is pretty toned down, but the unique silver and blue color scheme inside and out helps this car stand out; the exterior logos and the "Indy 500" dash plaque are about the only other call outs to signify this car's importance. The use of the '82 Camaro as a pace car that year helped usher in the launch of the all-new third-gen Camaro, and this one has been well cared for spending 30 years in a private collection.

Other than the exclusive paint scheme and graphics, the replica pace cars didn't receive any performance modifications. In 1982, the Camaro Z28 was powered by a 5.0-liter V8, and this car has the optional TBI Crossfire Fire Injection providing 165 horsepower – 20 hp more than the carbureted 5.0-liter V8 available that year. The TBI Camaro was only offered with an automatic transmission. The odometer reading shows just under 23,000 miles, and while the title reads "exempt" the overall condition of this car would suggest that these are actual original miles.

The 2019 Raleigh Classic took place December 6-7, and it featured more than 250 classic and collectible vehicles crossing the auction block including 33 straight at no reserve to start things off.
