Top 10 Highest-Priced Auction Cars Sold In 2019

This year proved to be quite a solid year for collector car auctions, and that is evident when looking at the highest hammer prices of 2019. Not surprisingly, half of the vehicles on this list are Ferraris, and it took some impressive metal to keep Ferrari from claiming the top spot. These auctions took place all over the world from Pebble Beach to Abu Dhabi, and the top 10 lots from this year sold for a collective price of more than $100 million*! 2002 Ferrari F2002 ($6,643,750)

You know it's been a good year for auction cars when the tenth highest-price lot was a race-winning Formula 1 car formerly driven by Michael Schumacher. Chassis no. 219 won the pole at the 2002 Spanish Grand Prix and victories at the San Marino, Austrian and French Grand Prix races, and it was auctioned off by RM Sotheby's Abu Dhabi auction for $6,643,750.

1958 Ferrari 250 GT Series I Cabriolet ($6,800,000)

This 1958 Ferrari 250 GT Series I Cabriolet was the lowest-priced of the four Ferrari 250 GTs to make this list, but it's no budget car with a hammer price of $6,800,000. Gooding & Company sold this one off at Pebble Beach, and it was one of just 40 Series I Cabriolets ever made and one of just five with the stylish factory fender vents.

2017 Pagani Zonda Aether ($6,812,500)

The Pagani Zonda is one of the most exclusive high-performance supercars ever made, but this 2017 Pagani Zonda Aether is literally a one of a kind. This one-off version of the Zonda 760, which was a road-going version of the track-only Zonda R, was one of the final Zondas ever made, and it's unique with its custom, high-end Aether apparel touches. RM Sotheby's Abu Dhabi saw this Zonda Aether hammer for $6,812,500.

1963 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta ($7,595,000)

This beautiful 1963 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta is not only well documented back to its original owner, but its past owners include actor Nicolas Cage. This Ferrari was one of the final 250 GT SWB Berlinettas ever made (fourth to last, to be specific), and it was auctioned off for $7,595,000 by Gooding & Company.

1965 Ford GT40 Roadster Prototype ($7,650,000)

As nice as it would be to add a Ford GT40 to any collection, adding one of the five GT40 Roadster prototypes would be even better. This was the very first GT40 Roadster prototype ever built, and it's the only roadster prototype known to have survived in its original condition. On top of that, this test car has been driven by the likes of Carroll Shelby, Ken Miles and Jim Clark! With that kind of provenance and exclusivity, it's no wonder that this 1965 Ford GT40 Roadster Prototype sold for $7,650,000 at RM Sotheby's Monterey auction.

1958 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider ($9,905,000)

According to the auction listing, Ferrari built 165 examples of the 250 GT SWB Berlinetta over a three-year period, and this particular car was the 132nd produced. Between its late-production and its well-documented ownership by Ferrari historian Marcel Massini, this 1962 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta sold for $8,145,000 through RM Sotheby's Monterey auction.

2014 Lamborghini Veneno Roadster ($8,522,207)

To celebrate its 50th anniversary, Lamborghini introduced the Lamborghini Veneno Roadster, which was based on the Aventador supercar. Bonhams Bonmont Sale featured the seventh of the nine examples ever produced, and this one sold for $8,522,207.

The Ferrari 250s are going to continue to be hot at auctions, and this 1958 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider was this year's top-selling Ferrari at auction. Gooding & Company saw this documented and numbers-matching Ferrari hammer for $9,905,000, and this high price netted one of the finest 250 GTs you're likely to find. This one has everything from an award-winning restoration to notable past owners.

1939 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900 B Touring Berlinetta ($18,997,883)

The only pre-war car to make this list is the 1939 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900 B Touring Berlinetta that sold at Artcuiral's Sale Rétromobile event for $18,997,883. This gorgeous art deco car is one of just five Carrozzeria Touring Berlinettas ever built, and this was the second example produced. One of the five is housed in the Alfa Romeo museum, while two others have won top honors at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.

1994 McLaren F1 LM ($19,805,000)

Following the McLaren F1's victory at the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans, McLaren celebrated by modifying two of its street-legal F1 supercars to Le Mans specs. The F1 LM featured a higher engine output of 680 horsepower along with race-spec aerodynamics from a High-Downforce Kit. This one-of-two 1994 McLaren F1 LM represented the highest price paid at auction for a car in 2019 when it sold for $19,805,000 at RM Sotheby's Monterey auction.
