The 5th generation, C5, was introduced for the 1997 model year. The new car was stiffer and lighter than the C4 due to its hydroformed rails. It also had a transaxle for better weight distribution and increased interior room. However, the most important feature of the new Corvette was the all aluminum LS1 V-8 engine. The C5 was available with either a 6-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. Initially, only a coupe with a removable roof panel was available. In 1998, a convertible was introduced.
