To launch the 1984 Toyota Celica Supra, the marketing folks ran a series of magazine advertisements, each with a one-word headline in very large type. Hot. Torrid. Quick. Agile. Express. The point was pretty clear. This was a true performance car.
It wasn't just marketing hype, either. Hemmings describes Car and Driver's comparison test: “In the eight-car test in C/D, the Supra came in second only to the Audi Coupe GT. The magazine called the car 'The Japanese Bimmer,' noting, 'The whole driving experience is what you'd expect from a big Bimmer coupe. The difference is that mere mortals can afford the Supra.'” In 1984, Car and Driver gave the Supra its highly coveted 10 Best award for the second year in a row.
The '84 model brought: “Supra's first significant freshening. Parking lamps wrapped around the bumper to form marker lamps, and new taillamps were added. Exterior door handles for the 1984 pull up, rather than out as on earlier cars, and the hatch and rear bumper were painted body color rather than black. Toyota added a more prominent billboard-style decal proudly announcing 'SUPRA' across the rear hatch. The steering wheel was revised to a… two-spoke, and the interior featured an updated fabric. The… speedometer from previous years was replaced with a proper 130-mph unit. Power again increased, this time to 160hp.”
Many enthusiasts believe 1984 marked the year the Supra finally established itself as a sports performer to be reckoned with; the year the Supra legend really began.
Offered here is an exceedingly rare example of this legendary automobile: After 36 years, this is a 100% original, virtually showroom-condition survivor. Just 6,612 miles, all accumulated by its single owner since day-one.
The car's red exterior paint is perfectly complemented with black trim on its front bumper, side mirrors, window surrounds, roof spoiler, rear fascia, and (un-marred) side rub-strips. Twin silver tape-stripes run the length of the body. All four fender flares are free of cracks or any sign of age. The beautifully designed “Celica Supra” badging is in perfect condition, as is the broad Supra graphic across the car's rear hatch as mentioned above. Lighting lenses and window glass are without flaws, as are the 10-spoke alloy wheels (no curb rash).
Inside, the updated-for-'84 interior features gray cloth upholstery, with dark and lighter gray-horizontal-striped inserts in the well-bolstered sports bucket seats. The striped treatment inserts are present on the rear bench seat, and carried through to the door trim for an overall very attractive, coordinated appearance. All interior surfaces are free of any sign of damage, and indeed, very few signs of wear at all. The black dash houses the striking yellow-pointer instruments--including the 130-mph speedometer--behind crystal-clear Lucite; the twin-spoke “Supra” branded steering wheel; and the audio system with multi-channel equalizer. Even the 5-speed console-mounted shifter knob shows no real sign of use. Likewise, dark-gray floor carpeting and lighter Toyota-branded carpet mats are virtually without wear. Beneath the hatch, the cargo area continues the pristine condition.
Under the hood, the 160-horsepower 2.6-liter straight-six engine is all original. All components are properly installed, as are all factory data plates and information decals. The car's undercarriage not only shows no sign of rust, there's almost no sign of dirt!
