Car and Driver is far from alone in hailing the 1969 Camaro. Internet automotive site, thedrive.com, weighed in with: “The '69 Camaro is the most loved car in America.” What accounts for this level of passion?
Car and Driver again: “This model year's combination of classic beauty, tidy size, and ample under-hood space makes it a favorite starting point for tuners and collectors. GM vice-president of global design Ed Welburn not only owns one, he all but cloned the '69 Camaro to renew Chevy's fight with the immortal Ford Mustang.” It seems the urge to improve on the late-sixties technology is almost irresistible, because as thedrive.com put it: “… leaving the '69 Camaro in pristine, factory-sealed condition is boring.”
Offered here is a true X11-coded 1969 Camaro SS, upgraded, updated, and re-powered. While the car's appearance is stunning in its silver paint complemented with twin, wide black racing stripes, the modifications have been carefully made to respect the integrity of the car's classic design. Performance mattered in the build, but so did preserving the original character. Just 3,623 miles have been added since the work was completed.
The virtually perfect exterior metallic paint finish is the result of the professional application. There are no flaws. (To best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.) The underside of the trunk lid, and all door surfaces are all properly painted. The front chin spoiler and underside of the hood are correctly painted black. The twin Z28-style, black racing stripes (with correct wider separation on the trunk lid) beautifully emphasize the Camaro's cowl-induction hood and the rear-deck spoiler. Chrome trim—including window surrounds, door handles, wheel-well trim, grille and taillight trim, rear-fender trim, and both bumpers—is all in very good-to-excellent condition with minimal patina from age. Factory badging is all correctly mounted: “SS” emblems in the front grille and on the rear fascia, “Camaro” script hood emblem, “350” front-fender badges, and “Camaro SS” badges behind the front wheel wells. Cabin glass and lighting lenses (including on the lower-front driving lights) are clear and undamaged. American Racing® Torque Thrust, 5-spoke, 17-inch, polished wheels are mounted with BFGoodrich® g-force 215/45 Z-rated performance tires.
Inside, most of the car's stock appointments remain. Fresh black-and-white houndstooth fabric seat upholstery (with black vinyl trim) is perfectly installed. There is no sign of wear or other flaws. Stock door trim has been returned to original. The car's headliner, door panels and black cabin carpeting all show beautifully. A 2-spoke, woodgrain-trimmed, “SS”-badged steering wheel frames the stock AC®-branded instrument cluster. An Alpine® audio head unit has replaced the factory radio. Four, square-design, original, white-faced engine-monitoring gauges remain on the forward center console, augmented by additional AutoMeter® coolant-temperature and oil-pressure gauges mounted below the dash. The grab-handle-style shift lever for the automatic transmission is located on the woodgrain-trimmed console. Fresh black carpeting (protected with rubber floor mats) covers the cabin floors. The car's trunk is clean, properly trimmed, and includes a full-size spare and the correct vinyl mat.
Under the hood, the fuel-injected, 434-cubic-inch V8 is a very impressive presence. A Chevrolet-branded, matte black, open-sided air cleaner, braided-steel fuel and coolant lines, polished-metal Duratech®-branded valve covers, aluminum radiator, and custom exhaust headers all add interest. The engine bay is clean, orderly, and properly laid out. Viewed from below, the car's frame is perfectly straight and undamaged. The performance- engineered, custom full dual-exhaust system with crossover, and the clean undersides of the engine and transmission are visual focal points.
The car's original build tag (showing the “X11” code) and its identification tag are both mounted. The original owner's manual is included in the sale, as are records of the recent restoration work.
