“Chevy Trucks. Tough and Tightfisted.” -Period Chevrolet truck magazine advertisement
The above-quoted magazine ad went onto trumpet the Chevy pickup's computer-matched brakes (“front disc brakes and finned-drum rear brakes are automatically computer-matched to gross vehicle weight”); tough ladder-type frame (“design allows low cab mounting, easy entry”); counter-angled rear shocks (“to help reduce brake and power hop”); long vehicle life (“95.7% of all Chevy trucks in the ten most recent model years were still on the job.”); and longer service intervals (30,000 miles between spark plug changes, 7,500 miles between oil changes and chassis lubrication, 30,000 miles between air cleaner elements). The ad summed it all up with the Chevy truck theme: "Built to Stay Tough."
The '72 Chevy Cheyenne K10 ½-ton pickup offered here is compelling proof of truth in advertising: a well-maintained, low-mileage, 50 year-old, very well-documented truck that looks nowhere near its age. Sold new on July 7, 1972, by Whitlock Chevrolet in Del Norte, Colorado (the trade-in was a '63 Chevy ½-ton pickup) and spent much of its life in Montana. Its odometer currently shows 28,376 miles, a remarkably conservative 567 miles per-year on average. The very well-kept exterior orange (code 516) and white (code 521) paint and houndstooth-trimmed interior add to its classic appeal. As tough and capable as it is, this 4WD pickup was definitely pampered by its owners.
The truck's orange-and-white exterior is largely original and in excellent condition. Sheet metal is free of damage, dings, or dents. The front grille with its blue bowtie emblem is similarly well-kept and free of wear or damage. All other factory bright trim—on fender edges, dual side-view mirrors, door handles--is in place and in excellent condition with negligible patina. Original badging—the blue-bowtie grille emblem, “Cheyenne 10 Super” front-fender emblems, “8 350” engine-identification emblems, and “Chevrolet” tailgate lettering on woodgrain—remains mounted. Cabin glass (including the sliding rear window) and all lighting lenses (including side-markers) are clear and uncracked. The cargo box is protected with a no-slip, black liner; the cargo area shows only very light evidence of use. Factory 15-inch, white-pained, steel wheels (with chrome hubcaps) are mounted with 31x10.5 LT Michelin® Defender tires.
Inside the cab, the truck's “time capsule” presentation continues. Door panels feature white inserts with woodgrain trim, part of the Cheyenne package. The seat upholstery is parchment-colored vinyl with houndstooth, black-and-white fabric inserts; the headliner is padded white vinyl. The original 2-spoke, bowtie-branded, black steering wheel frames the body-color-painted dashboard with stock analog instrumentation, as well as other controls (including the switch for the factory-installed auxiliary fuel-tank). Gauge lenses are clear and markings are crisp. Woodgrain trim and a “Cheyenne” emblem adorn the glove-box cover. The slide-lever controls for heating and ventilation are located in the center-dash below the truck's period-look, GM-branded AM-FM push-button radio. The shift lever for the automatic transmission is mounted on the steering column. Cabin floors are covered in black carpeting which is free of excessive wear. The cab features a sliding rear-window with rrnch-owner-requisite rifle mount. The truck's factory-mounted identification and information tags remain in place. Documentation includes the original dealer invoice, service parts information glove-box sticker showing all installed equipment, the truck's warranty card, a 1972 Chevrolet pickup-truck brochure, and the owner's manual.
Under the hood, Chevrolet's venerable (and reliable) 350 cubic-inch V8 retains its original appearance and has been maintained. It is free of chrome add-ons, with all components in place. Viewed from below, the truck's chassis is similarly clean, straight, and undamaged. The exhaust system has been recently renewed.
