Released as a mid-year option in April of 1969, the Pontiac Trans Am was released after a directive from then Pontiac General Manager, John DeLorean to create a “Z-28 killer”. Pontiac paid a $5 royalty to the SCCA for every Trans Am sold for the use of the popular racing series name. The Trans Am was an immediate success and remained popular with enthusiasts until it went out of production in 2002.
The 2000 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am featured here is an excellent example of the Pontiac Excitement generated by this now defunct brand. This Trans Am is painted in the factory Maple Red Metallic hue. The finish appears to be original and has been well maintained and shines with a deep luster. The tan power convertible top features a glass rear window with electric defogger and is in very good condition, only showing some light wear. This Trans Am features the WS6 appearance package which consists of functional front-end dams leading into an under-hood ram air system with identifying emblems. The dual sport rear view mirrors are painted body color and are electrically controlled along with the rear mounted power antenna. The 17 X 9 polished aluminum wheels are also a part of the WS6 option and are wrapped in P215/35ZR17 Sumitomo low-profile radial tires.
Inside the interior feels like a jet fighter cockpit with its red instrument lighting and well bolstered seats. The tan upholstery has been well cared for showing only some light wear with the carpet protected by a custom set of carpeted floor mats embroidered with the Trans Am 'bird and name. The shifter handle and steering wheel are both wrapped with a leather stitched covering with the steering wheel sitting on a tilt column. The steering wheel also features fingertip controls for the radio and this car features cruise control. This steering wheel frames the factory gauge package which includes oil, temperature, and volts gauge, with a tachometer and 150 mph speedometer. This T/A also features the optional 500-watt Monsoon 10-speaker system powered by the Delco AM/FM/CD Player with equalizer to blast your favorite road trip songs. The reclining bucket seats feature power controls and lumbar support. Windows and locks are also power.
Under the hood sits the aluminum LS1 V8 with fuel injection producing 345hp thanks to the WS6 upgrades. The engine compartment is clean and well detailed with all the factory decals and markings still present. The electrical system is factory upgraded with a 102-amp generator to accommodate the abundance of factory options. Underneath the subframe and underbody are likewise clean, only showing some light surface rust on components and the floorboards are clean free of any rust through. This vehicle features power four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock brakes and power steering. Handling is further enhanced with the WS6 handling package.
There is a saying that as the top goes when the top goes down the fun goes up! This WS6 Trans Am is well prepared to provide its next owner with many a spirited drive with fun filled top-down cruising either on the boulevard or a curvy back road.
