The GMC Syclone is a rare thing these day, but still capable of putting sports cars to shame

We all have the need to let our hair down and go a bit wild from time to time — it’s human nature. Vehicle engineers are no different, but the results are usually far more exciting than a few bottles of wine and a hangover the next morning. The GMC Syclone is a real wild child of a pickup, and this low mileage example from Raleigh Classic is looking for a new home.

Looking as fresh as it did the day it left the factory in 1991, this GMC Syclone has clocked just 6913 miles with two owners. The images paint exactly the sort of time capsule picture you’d imagine. Its paint is 100% original and pristine, contrasting red badging is all present and correct, and even the flatbed cover is unblemished.

The interior is just as impressive, being totally original and unmodified. The red-piped sport seat almost look as if they’ve never been sat on, and its dashboard is free of any age related cracks. Features fitted from the factory include power steering, power brakes, cruise control, air conditioning and a cassette player.

Under the hood is that now famous turbocharged Vortex motor. This 4.3-liter V6 is complete with its Mitsubishi turbo and Garrett intercooler for an output of 280-horsepower and 350 lbs/ft of torque. Power is sent to all for wheels for maximum traction that enabled a 0-60mph sprint of 4.6 seconds. This sports car shaming performance had never been seen in a truck before. Road & Track famously put the GMC up against a Ferrari of the period, with the Syclone coming our favorably.

Just 2,998 GMC Syclone were produce in 1991, all in the same black hue as this example. 1992 examples were to be offered in other colors, however, just three we built before the model was cancelled. Evidently, these monster trucks are very rare indeed.

This almost box-fresh Syclone will be auctioned at the 21 -22 July Raleigh Classic sale with an estimate of $38,000 - $42,000.
